As we have all gone through the process of learning new words, we can make the assumption that it is not an easy task to do. Writing down unfamiliar words from the board is a common process which is not very effective because in that way new words stay only in our short-term memory and if we don’t use them in real life, we are prone to forgetting them. One of the most popular and valuable techniques of learning new lexis is the old-fashioned reading. Doing a lot of reading in any foreign language is very beneficial and it definitely enriches a student’s vocabulary and it develops their sentence building to a higher level. Although we are all aware of the advantages that reading brings, the reality is quite different and we must face the fact that it is a time-consuming activity that not too many practice today. Even if so, how many people check up unknown words in the dictionary and how many just rely on the context to get the meaning across? From the above stated, it is certain that vocabulary is a sensitive part of learning a foreign language that especially requires a more active participation on the part of the learner so that it can be successful. In fact, ‘the job’ is not finished if the students only memorize the new words.
